Ingredients:
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 ½ cups warm water (about 110°F/43°C)
- 1 tablespoon malt syrup (optional)
- 1 large pot of water
- 2 tablespoons baking soda
- Sesame seeds (optional)
- Poppy seeds (optional)
- Everything bagel seasoning (optional)
Instructions:
- Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast in a bowl. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- In a mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, and malt syrup (if using). Add the yeast mixture and mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer on low speed.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough, divide it into 8 equal pieces, and shape each piece into a round bagel with a hole in the middle.
- Let bagels rest for 30 minutes, covered with a damp cloth.
- Bring a large pot of water to a gentle boil and add baking soda.
- Boil each bagel for 30-60 seconds on each side, then remove with a slotted spoon and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Sprinkle bagels with desired toppings.
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and bake bagels for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
