Ingredients:
- 4 cups (500g) all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
- 1 teaspoon (5g) baking soda
- 1 teaspoon (5g) salt
- 2 tablespoons (25g) granulated sugar (optional)
- 1 ¾ cups (415ml) buttermilk, cold
- 2 tablespoons (30g) unsalted butter, melted
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Grease a baking sheet or line with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar (if using).
- Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients. Pour in the buttermilk and melted butter.
- Using a wooden spoon or your hands, quickly mix the ingredients until just combined. Avoid overmixing.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently shape it into a round loaf, about 6-8 inches in diameter.
- Place the loaf on the prepared baking sheet. Use a sharp knife or lame to cut a deep cross into the top of the loaf, about ½ inch deep.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
- Transfer the loaf to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing and serving.
