Ingredients:
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced (approx. 1 lb / 450g)
- 3 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 tbsp granulated sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup sour cream, full fat
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened to room temperature
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp cracked black pepper
Instructions:
- Melt the butter over medium heat in a large non-stick skillet or heavy-bottomed pan.
- Add the sliced onions and salt; cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes.
- Sprinkle in the granulated sugar and continue cooking for another 15–20 minutes until the onions are a deep mahogany brown and smell nutty.
- Remove onions from heat and let them cool completely in the refrigerator.
- In a medium mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth.
- Gradually fold in the full-fat sour cream until no lumps remain.
- Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and black pepper.
- Gently fold the chilled, caramelized onions into the cream mixture using a spatula until evenly distributed.
- Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours to allow the flavors to fuse.
