Ingredients:

  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced (approx. 1 lb / 450g)
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup sour cream, full fat
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened to room temperature
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp cracked black pepper

Instructions:

  1. Melt the butter over medium heat in a large non-stick skillet or heavy-bottomed pan.
  2. Add the sliced onions and salt; cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes.
  3. Sprinkle in the granulated sugar and continue cooking for another 15–20 minutes until the onions are a deep mahogany brown and smell nutty.
  4. Remove onions from heat and let them cool completely in the refrigerator.
  5. In a medium mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth.
  6. Gradually fold in the full-fat sour cream until no lumps remain.
  7. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and black pepper.
  8. Gently fold the chilled, caramelized onions into the cream mixture using a spatula until evenly distributed.
  9. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours to allow the flavors to fuse.
