Ingredients:
- 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
- 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup (240ml) milk
- 2 tablespoons (28g) unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- 2 cups (240g) powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup (60ml) milk, or more to reach desired consistency
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Sprinkles, for topping
Instructions:
- Whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, nutmeg, and salt in a large bowl.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
- Gently pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Be careful not to overmix!
- Pour vegetable oil into a deep frying pan or pot to a depth of about 2-3 inches. Heat over medium heat until the oil reaches 350-375°F (175-190°C). Use a candy thermometer for accuracy.
- On a lightly floured surface, gently roll out the dough to about 1/2-inch thickness. Cut out donuts using a donut cutter or biscuit cutter. You can also use a knife to cut squares or strips.
- Carefully drop the donuts into the hot oil, a few at a time. Fry for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through.
- Remove the donuts from the oil with a slotted spoon or spider and place them on a wire rack to drain excess oil and cool slightly.
- Whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Add more milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency.
- Dip the warm donuts into the glaze and return them to the wire rack to allow the glaze to set. Sprinkle with sprinkles or other toppings as desired.
