Ingredients:

  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup (240ml) milk
  • 2 tablespoons (28g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 2 cups (240g) powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) milk, or more to reach desired consistency
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Sprinkles, for topping

Instructions:

  1. Whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, nutmeg, and salt in a large bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
  3. Gently pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Be careful not to overmix!
  4. Pour vegetable oil into a deep frying pan or pot to a depth of about 2-3 inches. Heat over medium heat until the oil reaches 350-375°F (175-190°C). Use a candy thermometer for accuracy.
  5. On a lightly floured surface, gently roll out the dough to about 1/2-inch thickness. Cut out donuts using a donut cutter or biscuit cutter. You can also use a knife to cut squares or strips.
  6. Carefully drop the donuts into the hot oil, a few at a time. Fry for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  7. Remove the donuts from the oil with a slotted spoon or spider and place them on a wire rack to drain excess oil and cool slightly.
  8. Whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Add more milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency.
  9. Dip the warm donuts into the glaze and return them to the wire rack to allow the glaze to set. Sprinkle with sprinkles or other toppings as desired.
