Ingredients:

  • 1 large yellow onion, finely diced (150g)
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp brown sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup full-fat sour cream
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

Instructions:

  1. Heat the butter and olive oil in a small non-stick skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the diced onions and salt, stirring frequently. Once the onions soften, sprinkle in the brown sugar.
  3. Continue to sauté for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions reach a deep mahogany-colored hue and smell nutty.
  4. Transfer the caramelized onions to a small plate and let them cool for at least 10 minutes to prevent the dip from breaking.
  5. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the sour cream, mayonnaise, onion powder, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, and pepper until the mixture is smooth.
  6. Fold in the cooled caramelized onions using a spatula until evenly distributed.
  7. Chill the dip for 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld before serving.
