- 1/2 teaspoon (2.5ml) granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon (1.2ml) salt
- 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, very cold and cut into small cubes
- 1/4 cup (60ml) ice water
- 4 medium apples (such as Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, or Gala), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons (28g) unsalted butter, melted
- 2 tablespoons (30ml) granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon (15ml) lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon (5ml) ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon (1.2ml) ground nutmeg
- Pinch of salt
- 1 large egg, beaten (optional)
- 1 tablespoon (15ml) milk or water (optional)
- 1 tablespoon (15ml) coarse sugar (such as turbinado or sanding sugar, optional)
Instructions:
- Combine flour, sugar, and salt in a bowl. Cut in cold butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add ice water until dough just comes together.
- Form the dough into a disc, wrap tightly in plastic wrap, and chill for at least 30 minutes.
- In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, melted butter, sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Toss gently to coat.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out the chilled dough into a 12-inch circle. Transfer to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Arrange the apple slices in a circular pattern on the dough, leaving a 2-inch border.
- Fold the edges of the dough over the apple filling, pleating as needed.
- Brush the dough with egg wash and sprinkle with coarse sugar (optional).
- Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 35-45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.
- Let cool slightly before serving this delicious apple galette.
