- 4 cups stale bread, cubed (preferably sourdough or white)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon dried sage
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 1 cup canned crushed pineapple, drained
- 1/2 cup chicken or vegetable broth
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup or honey (optional for sweetness)
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a medium skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent (approximately 5 minutes).
- Stir in the minced garlic, thyme, sage, and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
- Season with salt and pepper.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the stale bread cubes and the sautéed mixture.
- Gently fold in the drained pineapple, broth, and optional nuts.
- Add maple syrup or honey for additional sweetness, if desired.
- Transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish and spread evenly.
- Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
- Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.
