Ingredients:

  • 4 cups stale bread, cubed (preferably sourdough or white)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried sage
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 cup canned crushed pineapple, drained
  • 1/2 cup chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup or honey (optional for sweetness)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a medium skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
  3. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent (approximately 5 minutes).
  4. Stir in the minced garlic, thyme, sage, and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
  5. Season with salt and pepper.
  6. In a large mixing bowl, combine the stale bread cubes and the sautéed mixture.
  7. Gently fold in the drained pineapple, broth, and optional nuts.
  8. Add maple syrup or honey for additional sweetness, if desired.
  9. Transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish and spread evenly.
  10. Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes.
  11. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
  12. Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.
