Ingredients:
- 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon (2g) salt
- 1 tablespoon (12g) granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
- 1/4 cup (60ml) ice water
- 2 large apples (about 400g), peeled, cored, and diced
- 1/4 cup (50g) brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon (5g) ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon (15ml) lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon (15g) unsalted butter
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1 tablespoon (12g) coarse sugar (optional, for sprinkling)
Instructions:
- Make the Dough: Combine flour, salt, and sugar in a bowl. Cut in butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add ice water and mix until just combined; form into a disc. Chill the dough for 30 minutes.
- Prepare the Filling: In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add diced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Cook until apples are tender and juicy, about 5-7 minutes. Let cool.
- Assemble the Turnovers: Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Roll out chilled dough on a floured surface. Cut into squares of about 5x5 inches. Spoon filling onto half of each square and fold the other half over, sealing edges.
- Bake: Transfer turnovers to a lined baking sheet. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sugar. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
- Serve: Let cool slightly before serving.
