Ingredients:

  • 3 tbsp (42g) unsalted butter
  • 2 large (300g) yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 tbsp (25g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp (3g) salt
  • 1/4 tsp (1g) black pepper
  • 3 cups (710ml) beef broth
  • 1 tbsp (15ml) Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp (5ml) soy sauce

Instructions:

  1. Melt the butter over medium heat in a heavy-bottomed skillet or saucepan.
  2. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they transition from translucent to a deep, golden brown.
  3. Sprinkle the flour over the browned onions and stir constantly for 1–2 minutes until the flour is fully absorbed and smells slightly nutty.
  4. Slowly pour in the beef broth while whisking or stirring vigorously to prevent lumps.
  5. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce and soy sauce.
  6. Bring to a gentle simmer for 5–10 minutes until the sauce is velvety and coats the back of a spoon.
